Critical Telecommunications Facility – D&C Electrical Substation Upgrade .

Ryan Wilks successfully upgraded the power infrastructure at a critical telecommunications facility in Melbourne, Victoria.  Working closely with the client and addressing rising power demands, the project featured comprehensive design & coordination, securing a new 1500kVA substation & maximising the existing infrastructure. The building’s electrical infrastructure, upgraded by Ryan Wilks in 2015 with foresight for this future substation enhancement, were seamlessly integrated into the new substation design. This full design and construction project replaced the existing substation kiosk to meet the growing demand of the facility and new regulatory & compliance requirements.

Key Outcomes:

  • End to end design, construction, and project management of this substation upgrade.
  • Negotiations with United Energy securing a location for the new easement within a shared tenancy plot with limited available real estate.
  • Negotiations and comprehensive engineering design submissions with United Energy procuring the 1500kVA Substation with the full 1600Amp site maximum demand allocation, maximising the existing external site infrastructure capability.
  • Coordination of the Supply Authority connection applications, easement requirements & surveys and shutdown cutover weekend.
  • Relocation of existing underground hydrant and stormwater services to accommodate the new substation easement .
  • Excavation and civil works for new substation easement including foundations, retaining walls, earthing and final landscaping adjacent to the existing substation easement.
  • New underground electrical Low Voltage consumers mains cabling upgrade.
  • Temporary standby diesel generator power installation, commissioning and changeover to support building load during the planned shutdown.
  • Shutdown of the existing street substation, cutover of the new substation HV & LV street mains, LV Consumer mains (including removal of existing consumer mains and cable hauling the new) together with the removal of the redundant substation kiosk all in a 12-hour planned window.
  • Decommissioning and final landscaping of the redundant substation and easement

The project was completed on schedule with zero downtime to the facility. Together with previous successfully completed  MSB and UPS upgrades by Ryan Wilks, this substation upgrade ensures the site is now electrically supported by the latest technology from the High Voltage substation to the final distribution boards, guaranteeing robust & reliable power for the next 30 years.
