St Leonards Railway Station – Lighting Upgrade

St Leonards Railway Station overviewRyan Wilks recently completed a project at the St Leonards Railway Station to upgrade the existing lighting system and rectify a large number of functional and safety issues with the electrical system.

Originally opening in 1890 with the opening of the North Shore Line, St Leonards Railway Station underwent a major overhaul / upgrade in February 2000. Since that time most of the station’s electrical system, including switchboards, lighting, power outlets and cabling, had received little attention and was in need of some TLC.

Ryan Wilks was awarded the project after a lengthy and detailed tendering process.

Along with a strict timeframe, this project brought with it some new challenges for the Ryan Wilks construction team in the form of stringent Railway Corridor safety requirements, including:

  • Rail Industry Safety Induction (RISI) training for each team member
  • Site specific safety inductions for each team member
  • A qualified Protection Officer (PO) to be present at all times, also conducting daily pre-start checks of each team member’s fitness to work
  • Along with the usual pedestrian barricading, PPE, Risk Assessments, Safe Work Method Statements, and a significant proportion of this project needing to be performed in the short overnight time windows that St Leonards Railway Station is closed and on specific track-work weekends in which the station was also closed.

The scope of work for this project included:

Lighting

The existing light fittings required cleaning, relamping and completely rewiring in Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) cable. LSZH cabling is a requirement in all Railway projects; however a previous contractor had installed regular PVC cabling, which all had to be replaced. LSZH cable provides great benefit in that in a fire it does not release any halogen gas, which is toxic both to humans and the environment.

A new C-Bus lighting control system was installed as part of this project, enabling greater control for station staff, and substantial energy savings by reducing the time that the external lights are switched on, depending on movement and sunlight. (Prior to this project all lights were on 24 hours a day, year round). 

Switchboards

Comprehensive maintenance to 18 electrical switchboards, as well as repairs to a power factor correction unit were carried out. 

UPS Room

  • Replacement of an existing non functioning UPS with a new SIEL Maxi T 6kVA UPS with special VRLA Battery to support the full load for 6 hours.
  • Removal of the existing ventilation system and the supply and installation of a 5kW split system inverter air conditioner to maintain a constant 23°C.
  • Installation of a new temperature monitoring alarm system that alerts the monitoring staff in the event the temperature in the room moved by ±0.5°C.
  • Sealing of wall penetrations; internally/externally, paint and finish alterations to existing surroundings.

The entire battery/UPS room needed thorough maintenance, including cleaning and tidying of the premises and equipment.

Thanks to the careful planning and labour adjustment by the Ryan Wilks project manager, this project was completed on time, within budget and to the satisfaction of our client.
