Casula Mall – Main Switchboard Upgrade

Ryan Wilks have successfully completed the replacement and upgrade of the new main switchboard at Casula Mall in the south western suburbs of Sydney.

Casula Mall opened in 1987 and featured Coles, Franklins and Kmart. Casula Mall underwent redevelopment in 1998 and 2007 and now comprises two supermarkets, one discount department store and more than 50 specialty stores.[1] Franklins closed in 2011 and was replaced by Supa IGA.[2] IGA closed its store in 2015 and will soon be replaced by Aldi which is opening in late 2016.

During our preliminary investigations and team meetings it was identified that the new main switch board would not fit in the proposed reclaimed space made from the demolition of the existing staff male toilets. After careful examination we proposed to split the main switch board into different sections MSB Q1, MSB Q2, DB Mall, DB ESS, DB T1 and DB T2. This enabled us to make use of the full length of the newly created open space within the switch room. Structural supports were also installed to support new heavy duty cable trays and new fire rating installed to ensure compliance with the BCA.

Both 2500amp consumer mains had to be upgraded and were rerouted on heavy-duty fire-rated cable trays. The supply authority Endeavor Energy requested that we install an access platform above the consumer mains trays. A new ducted Air conditioning unit was installed in the new main switch room with a fire trip interface at the existing Fire Indicator panel. This project had its challenges due to a 24-hour operating shopping mall. As part of the scheduled cutovers, we had to provide generators to support affected tenants on cut-over nights. Ryan Wilks once again showed their expertise in working within operational facilities. We are happy with the final installation, but more importantly to meet the client’s expectations relating to the quality of the installation.
