Vodafone Mt Waverley Data Centre – Containment Rack System Project
Ryan Wilks had previously executed a significant Electrical & Mechanical upgrade to this exchange servicing the Vodafone network. This site with its previously added capacity and redundancy, was ready for the first containment rack system.
A Rack Containment System is an air cooled, self-contained, cooling-only air conditioner designed to be placed in-row, between equipment racks. The in-row design allows the equipment to draw in air from the rear, capturing heat from the IT equipment in the hot aisle and neutralizing it before it mixes with the room air. Conditioned air is then discharged into the cold aisle, ready for immediate use by the equipment in the adjacent racks.
Ryan Wilks was engaged by Schneider Electric to supply and install a new ATS and distribution board, complete with dual supplies, connect power to four inline coolers and their external roof mount condensers. Due to the experience and knowledge of the site Ryan Wilks was also engaged to extend the existing rooftop walkway system and supply install a roof top condenser deck, along with the crane lifting of four dual fan condenser units and fixing into final position.
This was achieved by supplying and installing two new 160amp circuit breakers to the existing internal Main Switchboard 1, and Main Switchboard 2. New submains were installed from both locations utilising new and existing cable ladder supports, penetrating existing wall and ceiling surfaces to the new ATS/Distribution Board Location in the Equipment Room.
The contract encompassed all aspects of the work including associated trades works required to complete the project. Ryan Wilks displayed their depth of experience in completing such an electrical upgrade package within a critical “live” network site while maintaining the sites reliability and availability throughout the works.
Extensive planning and staging of the works during shut down windows together with astute communication across all stakeholders ensured the project was delivered without incident and interruptions to these critical services.
